Happy Senior Citizens’ Day

Yesterday, August 21, 2017, was a day not only to be an eclipse watcher, but also a day to honor your friends and family members that have earned the right to be known as a Senior Citizen.

In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation creating National Senior Citizens Day. The day was intended to honor and celebrate the older citizens in the United States. In his Presidential Proclamation, President Reagan said:

“For all they have achieved throughout life and for all they continue to accomplish, we owe older citizens our thanks and a heartfelt salute. We can best demonstrate our gratitude and esteem by making sure that our communities are good places in which to mature and grow older.”

As an elder law attorney, it is part of my job to care for and honor the place that seniors hold in our society.
I can do that by educating seniors and their families about the costs and options for long-term care. Together, we determine whether Medicaid might be a necessary component of the long-term care plan, and if so, how to implement that plan.

I can also do that by helping seniors create estate plans that will work as they intend. Together, we create the plan and then make sure that assets are titled correctly so that there will be a smooth transfer of assets after a death has occurred.

Honoring seniors through education and implementation of plans that work. This is part of my job.
